Maybe it’s a blonde you saved six months ago. A haircut you keep seeing on TikTok. A copper that looks different in every photo. Or a picture of someone whose hair somehow has exactly the amount of volume, movement, and texture you’ve been trying to explain.
Bring it.
Seriously.
Reference photos are one of the most useful things you can bring to a hair appointment. They give your stylist a visual starting point and can make it much easier to talk about what you like, what you don’t, and what you’re hoping to see when you look in the mirror at the end of your appointment.
But there’s one important thing to know before you sit down in the chair:
The goal usually isn’t to copy the photo exactly. It’s to figure out what you love about it and create a version that works for you.
Why Your Hair Won’t Look Exactly Like the Photo
Two people can get the same haircut and leave with completely different results.
That’s because the cut is only part of what you’re seeing.
Hair density, texture, natural movement, length, previous color, face shape, styling, and even how much hair someone has can change the way a haircut or color looks.
The same is true for color.
That bright blonde you saved may have started with naturally light, untouched hair. Your starting point might be brunette hair that has been colored several times. One guest may be able to reach a certain shade in one appointment, while another may need several appointments to get there while keeping the hair in good condition.
That doesn’t make the inspiration photo useless.
It makes the conversation around it more important.
Show Us What You Like About It
Here’s where reference photos become especially helpful.
Instead of only showing your stylist the picture, tell them what made you save it.
Is it the brightness around the face?
The way the layers fall?
The contrast between the highlights and the base color?
The length?
The bangs?
The overall feeling of it?
You might even discover that the thing you thought you wanted isn’t actually the thing you were responding to.
Maybe you don’t want that exact blonde. You like how dimensional it is.
Maybe you don't necessarily want that haircut. You want more movement around your face.
That distinction gives your stylist much more information to work with.
Bring More Than One Photo
One reference photo is good. A few can be even better.
If you notice that every photo you’ve saved has soft face-framing layers, warm brunette color, or bright blonde around the hairline, your stylist can start identifying the common thread.
And don't be afraid to bring photos of things you don't like, either.
Sometimes “I like this, but I don't want it this warm” or “I want layers, but not this short around my face” communicates more than trying to find the perfect terminology.
You do not need to know salon language before your appointment.

Your Hair History Matters, Too
The photos on your phone tell us where you’d like to go.
Your hair tells us where we're starting.
Be open with your stylist about previous color, lightener, box dye, chemical services, extensions, and anything else your hair has been through. Even services from months or years ago can sometimes affect what is possible today.
This is especially important if you're considering a significant color change.
Your stylist can use your inspiration photos along with your hair history, current condition, texture, and maintenance preferences to recommend a plan that makes sense.
Sometimes that plan can happen today.
Sometimes your dream hair is a process.
Knowing that before the service begins means everyone has a much clearer idea of what to expect.
Don't Forget About Maintenance
There’s another question worth asking when you show us your dream hair:
What does it take to keep it looking like that?
Some looks are relatively low-maintenance. Others require regular color appointments, toning, trims, specific products, or styling at home.
If you love a look but know you only want to visit the salon a few times a year, tell us.
If you spend approximately four minutes on your hair in the morning, we should probably know that too.
Your stylist can adjust the plan so your hair doesn't just look great when you leave Chemistry. It works with your actual life once you're home.
